Examples of perspectives/theories: ? Cognitive Social Learning Theory ? Operant Conditioning Theory ? Classical Conditioning Theory ? Empowerment Theory ? Developmental Perspective ? Humanistic Perspective ? Systems Perspective ? Social Exchange Theory ? Feminist Theory ? Reasoned Action Theory ? Social Network Theory ? Behavioral Perspective ? Social Constructionist Perspective ? Conflict Perspective ? Cognitive Theory ? Social Learning Theory ? Attachment Theory ? Social Identity Theory Examples of concepts: ? Systems Theory concepts: ? Persons are in continual transaction with their environment ? Systems are interrelated parts or subsystems constituting an ordered whole ? Each subsystem impacts all other parts and whole system ? Systems can have closed or open boundaries ? Systems tend toward equilibrium ? Family Systems Perspective concepts: ? Individual functioning shapes family functioning and family systems can create pathology within the individual ? Boundaries, roles, communication, family structure influence family functioning ? Psychodynamic Theory concepts: ? Unconscious and conscious mental activity motivate human behavior ? Ego functions mediate between individual and environment ? Ego defense mechanisms protect individuals from becoming overwhelmed by unacceptable impulses and threats ? Internalized experiences shape personality development and functioning ? Healing occurs through attention to transferences and the treatment relationship ? Social Exchange Theory concepts: ? Antecedents, consequences, personal expectations, and interpretation shape and maintain behavior in the present ? Self-interest determines social exchange ? Unequal resources determine power inequities and reciprocity is essential ? Conflict Perspective concepts: ? All societies perpetuate some forms of oppression & injustice and structural inequity ? Power is unequally divided & some groups dominate others ? Social order is based on manipulation and control by dominant groups ? Social change is driven by conflict, with periods of change interrupting periods of stability ? Life is characterized by conflict not consensus 2. Define and discuss the perspectives/theories and concepts in detail and give examples of how the social system demonstrates each theory and concept. Also discuss diversity issues relevant to the social system (race, ethnicity, social class, religion, physical/mental ability, sexual orientation, etc.). 3. Describe and illustrate ways in which social systems promote or block the achievement and maintenance of health and well-being for the social unit you selected. The student should consider this project a ?work in progress, and work on the case study throughout the semester in order to make the case study manageable and turn in quality work. This paper should be a maximum of 7 - 10 double-spaced pages in length and follow APA format. Include pertinent material from your textbook and include a minimum of three articles from social work journals that present research findings specifically relevant to understanding the causes of your client’s problems or relevant to how to provide effective social services.
